About this deal

I do have experience building tube guitar amps....initially from kits and then some scratch builds for Fender and Marshall schematics. So I can say from those builds I could even hear a difference in cheaper caps such as Orange Drops vs Mallory 150s in those builds. And a lot of musicians will pay top dollar for some vintage BumbleBee PIO caps for their Les Paul guitars claiming an improvement in guitar tone. So there has to be something there. It cannot be all imaginary. The change of cable was self-evident. My dear Van Den Hul First Ultimate was not suitable at all, too soft, with the midrange slightly in evidence, it works wonders with transistor electronics, but not here. I mounted a NEOTECH NEI-3001 MKIII cable with RCA KLEI PURE22 HARMONY connectors and the result is magnificent! great transparency, very rich in harmonics, natural, pure tones, never hard nor pressed. Great post and thread! I'm also looking at the R8 and the R800i as a first tube amp and wondered if you could share your experience between the two? Is the R800i worth the extra money, what are the main differences? I have Monitor Audio Gold 200 speakers which are a 4 ohm speaker rated at 88db, and I'm finding it hard to work out with the tube watts how to know what will drive my speakers, any thoughts? The 300B tube brings the artist in the room with you in a more haunting ethereal way than any solid state amp can muster. Along with this we usually hear a very wide soundstage that is three dimensional with a gentle treble that has just enough sparkle to make it all realistic. You unavoidably pay a cost to have better parts, transfomers, stout driver stage and power supply. I suspect that the Willsenton R300 is a very good introduction to a 300b SET amplifier at an inviting price. You can probably do much worst for1500.00 So I believe it is a very good value proposition. Those willing or able to spend more can step toward your 300b effort.

I'd get to hear what people are talking about with SET amps and 300b tubes and at a price that wouldn't kill me if I don't like that kind of sound. I appreciate your kind words, thanks. I’m been a participant on this forum since 2008 and still enjoy posting and reading the experiences of others here. Acquiring the Willsenton 300b SET was a very good decision on your part. But I felt an indefinable uneasiness ... Until I placed the banana plug of the speaker cable from the 4 ohm terminal to the 8 ohm terminal and then everything fell into place. The change between the two is huge (The TOTEM Sttaf have an impedance of 6 ohms)! It is clear that the Willsenton 300b SET is revealing and preserving the pure beauty of the music you love. Excellent outcome for you. Yes, you mentioned realism. That's what a good SET can do so well. the Chinese CV181 (Shuguang / Psvane) is a 6SN7 with a CV181 look ... Same heating current, same gain and oval plates."

AMTAST Stereo Hybrid Tube Amplifier Hybrid Tube Amplifier Modern Amp Design with Vintage Makeover AMT50 charles1dad I am glad that you see his point. I do not. He makes smug and arrogant assumptions about people he doesn’t even know. Are you fine with people being seen off by charlatans that give bogus reasons with ZERO supporting evidence other than their say so? They think their system sounds the same every day or that they can turn it off for some time, make a change and then determine a delta. Ha! Qualified engineers listen for weeks, making comparisons between a reference unit and the changed. Confirmation bias plays a huge part in an awful lot of opinions.

I found this information. Input sensitivity is changed when used as a power amplifier compared to integrated amplifier usage. So quite possibly the preamplifier section is thus bypassed when used as power amp.
