This life-changing Audible Original features a powerful mix of one-on-one life-coaching sessions and a personal narrative with vital take-aways that you can start using immediately. This grossly oversimplified understanding has created many complexities in our lives and taken away from us the very fundamentals of the joy of living. I received an ARC of this title from the publisher and Emily Burns with my thanks, and this is my unbiased review.

The upper reaches of society and government are in turmoil and matters aren’t helped by the conflict between fascist and communist which has spread beyond Germany to Spain and elsewhere, including Britain. The deeper Tom Wilde delves, both inside and outside college grounds, the more he wonders whether the murders are linked to the death of the girl with the silver syringe – and, just as worryingly, with the scandal surrounding King Edward VIII and his mistress Wallis Simpson. I find the interwar period fascinating anyway though it tends to be overshadowed by the Second World War and post-war eras. This gentleman also believes that opinions should be formed based on evidence not assumption, and encourages that approach from his students. In Berlin, a young Englishwoman slips away from the Olympics and evades the Gestapo to deliver vital papers to a Jewish scientist. The scenes from Baldwin’s perspective were particularly good (although I could have done without the ‘mysterious shadowy cabal’ scenes, which felt derivative and heavy handed) and the links to the Civil War with their proxy elements neatly dovetail in with the plot.

Although I enjoyed the way the characters (including Wilde) all hark back to the Great War, I found Wilde a bit bland and predictable (his American-Irish heritage trying too hard to make him an outsider) and his boxing expertise tried too hard to make him an action hero. What is the truth about the mysterious hunger marcher who begs charity and a bed from his beautiful young neighbour?

The audiobook reflects Rhonda’s own journey and shares the most direct way out for those experiencing hardship and the path to end pain and suffering endured by so many, and it shines a light on a future without anxiety or fear. This is a very clever book, rich in intrigue and deceptions, with an army of characters to keep track of. Set against the gathering drumbeat of war and moving from Berlin to Cambridge, from Whitehall to the Kent countryside, and from the Fens to the Aragon Front in Spain, this sweeping international thriller, like C J Sansom's WINTER IN MADRID, marks the beginning of a brilliant new series for Rory Clements. The taverna is the only place that Kostas and Defne can meet in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic and chilli peppers, creeping honeysuckle, and in the centre, growing through a cavity in the roof, a fig tree.
