This movie is about a new phenomenon of mass suicide in Japan at the time which is a real life problem of the society and this feature mixes true facts with fantastic elements and a message that is made clear from the beginning on: suicide is not a solution. Somehow, the attempt of this positive message is though failed. The movie is so dark, depressive and grey that it's definitely not beautiful to watch for disturbed hearts, minds and souls and might evoke a rather suicidal than anti-suicidal feeling. I can't say that it was a joy to watch the movie but it was definitely worth the experience and one realizes how beautiful the real life is after seeing such a movie about bullying, dying and suffering. Jisatsu Manyuaru or The Suicide Manual is a very atmospheric and slow paced Japanese movie with some surreal elements. Even though the movie is rather cheap, the simplistic approach fits well to the topic. The camera work is cold and simple, the lighting effects are dimmed down, the dialogues are slow and emotionless, the acting is repetitive and not quite intriguing and the few special effects are mediocre and uncreative. I guess that the negative and depressive flow was intended by the makers of the movie and even though it's hard to sit through the entire feature, I must admit that the result is artistically convincing. There are also a few positive elements in the movie as the music, the more emotional moments and the slightly weird ending. The mysterious story is nothing innovating but enough to keep you guessing until the end. my personal favourite chapter was on drugs, there’s even a whole summary at the end with a massive table showing the drug, dosage, where you can get them, where to take them- great. all the other chapters were similar, but of course about different types of methods. i especially appreciated the very specific detailed information showing the best places to leap from (with pictures) and the massive writing “LET IT BLEED” on the chapter about … the section on human anatomy. There’s no happy ending like the ones in the comedies. Happiness keeps on emerging repeatedly at a slow pace. Yes, the key is “repeatedly” and “at a slow pace”. Substantial events keep on emerging repeatedly at a slow pace. This is the first element leading to suicide. I forgot the other details (I had to return the book), but all the methods came with a simple diagram of painful ness, messiness, successfulness, etc.Since the book was intended to be a manual, the author did not spend too much space on discussing the reasons and philosophy behind suicide. Although he does rhetorically pose the question "Why must one live?" Wataru simply lays out the methods of suicide one by one and then analyzes each of them in detail. At last, everyone realized that there would be no time to show off their own ability, the 22nd century must arrive. (Of course, the 21st century is approaching, there won’t be any world war.) There will never be an end of the world. We stretched our arms into outer space, but it couldn’t bring us enough satisfaction. If we want more excitement, if we really want the world to come to its end, we have to do “something”. Ever since it came out in 1993, I had a vague impression that this book is nothing but an emo kids’ bible, a so called “メンヘラ” type of book; a book that tells you that it’s okay to feel ostracized, to feel different, that there is a way out of everything, i.e. suicide. I thought this was a book that tells people to kill themselves.

Final Exit' book updated for 2010 | Assisted-Dying Blog". May 14, 2010. Archived from the original on June 3, 2021 . Retrieved May 14, 2022. It has been translated into 12 languages. He wrote on the problem of "hardness of living" in Japanese society. I feel suicides are often viewed as a cowardly way to end one’s life (and sometimes a nuisance), but this book doesn’t belittle you for wanting to escape the pain in the world.
